Memo to the British PM مذكرة الي رئيس الوزراء البريطاني بشأن الوضع في جبال النوبة

London, 18th July 2011

Dear Honourable David Cameron, MP

Prime Minister of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland

The civilian population of South Kordofan State (the Nuba Mountains Region of Sudan) are currently subjected to a systematic campaign of aerial bombardment, artillery shelling, extra-judicial executions, arbitrary detention and forcible expulsion from their homeland.  The Sudan Government is openly planning, implementing and sustaining this campaign, resulting in immense human suffering, wide displacement, looting and the destruction of lives and material properties.

We, the citizens of the United Kingdom who come originally from the Nuba Mountains and their friends, request the British Government to exert its utmost efforts to bring to an end this worsening and tragic situation by:

Firstly: Putting into effect the necessary measures to force the Sudan Government to halt its current military operations in the region by bringing to an immediate end its combat missions, aerial bombardment and artillery shelling of civilians in the area.

Secondly: Placing by the strongest terms possible a package of demands to the Sudanese authorities to force them to stop with immediate effect the targeting, execution and arbitrary arrests of Nuba activists and suspected rebels’ sympathisers, and reversing the military buildup in the area by pulling out its Armed Forces, the Popular Defence Forces and security agents from the region.

Thirdly: Assisting the initiation of investigation into the killings, disappearances and other forms of grave violations of human rights by upholding international law and the pursuance of justice as demanded by the international community.

Fourthly: Putting into effect the necessary measures to force the Sudan Government to allow an immediate and unconditional access to humanitarian and relief organisations into the area, and seeking all other means possible to elevate the suffering of the people in the region.

Finally: Seeking to provide the people of the region with international protection as the only realistic means of bringing to an end these recurring episodes of extermination and deliberate displacement.
